The Plot of I Am Love 2009 Movie
The film begins with a formal dinner party hosted by Tancredi Recchi (Pippo Delbono) and his wife Emma (Swinton) for Tancredi's father Edoardo Sr. (Gabriele Ferzetti), who is celebrating his birthday and announcing his retirement. Edoardo Sr. reveals that he has chosen Tancredi and his grandson Edoardo Jr. (Flavio Parenti) to run the family's textile business, leaving out his other son Gianluca (Mattia Zaccaro).
Edoardo Jr., who is a talented chef, introduces his girlfriend Eva (Diane Fleri) to the family and announces his intention to marry her. Emma, who is originally from Russia and feels alienated from her husband and her high-society life, is intrigued by Edoardo Jr.'s friend Antonio (Edoardo Gabbriellini), who is also a chef and has prepared a cake for the party.
Emma's daughter Elisabetta (Alba Rohrwacher) returns from London, where she is studying photography, and gives her mother a CD with music by John Adams. She also confides in her that she has broken up with her boyfriend and that she is gay.
Emma visits Antonio's restaurant and is impressed by his cooking. She follows him to Sanremo, where he plans to open a new restaurant in an abandoned villa. They begin an affair and fall in love.
Meanwhile, Edoardo Jr. dies in a car accident after arguing with his father over the future of the company. Tancredi decides to sell the company to foreign investors, against Edoardo Jr.'s wishes. Emma attends the funeral and learns that Antonio was Edoardo Jr.'s partner in the restaurant project.
Emma decides to leave her husband and her old life behind and join Antonio in Sanremo. She tells Elisabetta about her affair and asks her to take care of Gianluca. She also writes a letter to Tancredi, confessing her love for Antonio and asking for a divorce.
The film ends with Emma and Antonio swimming in a lake near the villa, while Tancredi reads Emma's letter and breaks down in tears.
